@balance provides real-time managed pressure services for drilling operations with proven ability in maintaining relatively constant bottom hole pressure (BHP) throughout the drilling process resulting in optimum bore hole conditions and improved drilling efficiency. The fully automatic system can maintain constant BHP even when the rig pumps are off, allowing depleted zones to be drilled safely. The system has been used on multiple Shell assets to date, including Mars and Auger platforms in the GoM, Gannet platform in the North Sea, South Texas Land, Shell Rockies, and tight gas. Units are currently being mobilized to Libya in support of the exploration campaign there.
The recent agreement with Smith International has allowed Smith’s proprietary pressure balanced choke technology to be built into the systems for applications in the lower cost land drilling market. Other developments include a low cost downhole deployment valve, a multi phase flow computer model and a Productivity Index log while drilling.

This joint venture between Shell and Halliburton provides global solutions, including Openhole Liners, Cased-Hole Liners, Openhole Clad and FlexiClad systems designed for specific expandable tubular applications. GDI deploys a high sensitivity, borehole deployed gravity gradiometer. The system is sensitive enough to detect the density difference between oil and water, up to 300m from the well bore and then map the results in 3D. There are numerous applications including infill drilling, reservoir management, pinpointing the location of oil and water and their interfaces, and understanding changes in reservoir behavior over time. The applications in Smart Wells are numerous as the sensors may be left downhole to produce 4D mapping. Airborne deployment is under investigation.

The ThruBit concept is a patented drillbit with a center that can be disengaged allowing logging tools to pass through into open-hole. The logging tools can be either run on wireline and retrieved or automatically hung off below the bit allowing the entire string to be tripped while recording logs in the tool memory. This reduces risk associated with acquiring open-hole logs in unstable formations and saves the time associated with conditioning trips. The center of the bit can also be re-engaged, allowing wireline logs to be run on wireline before the section TD is reached and then drilling resumed.
